Adam Yokom, PhD

Assistant Professor

I am first generation college graduate from the southeast part of Michigan. I found an interest in research and teaching during my Bachelor's degree at Oakland University. Eventually, this grew into PhD (University of Michigan) and Postdoctoral (University of California, Berkeley) studies. All of these opportunities paved my path to joining the Department of Biochemistry as faculty in 2023. Outside of the exciting research ongoing in the lab, I enjoy time with my sons, sampling local beers and traveling.

Biochemistry PhD Student

2023 Cohort

I am a Biochemistry PhD student working characterize the authophagosomal tethering protein EPG5 to better elucidate the process of the autophagosome-lysosome fusion events in late autophagy. I enjoy being outdoors, engaging in sports, and playing board games with friends.

Undergraduate Researcher

Biological Science - Class of 2025

I am researching the interaction between autophagy tethering proteins and small Atg8 like proteins. I hope to uncover how these complexes drive autophagy maturation. I like to stay active playing sports and exploring the wilderness; I spend my summers as an outdoor adventure instructor for young teens.

Undergraduate Researcher

Biochemistry Major - Class of 2024

I am focused on creating a fusion assay to uncover which proteins are responsible for fusion between the autophagosome and the lysosome in autophagy. With this, we can investigate the kinetics of fusion. In my free time I enjoy going on hikes or binge watching Supernatural on Netflix.

Our group works closely with Dr. Stephanie Gates Lab, collectively called the Gatkom lab

Currently, her work focuses on understanding how Chaperones and the Ubiqutin Proteasome System communicate during Protein Quality Control pathways. We share equipment, lab meetings and resources. Joining our group means you get the best of both worlds and are supported across disciplines, techniques and biology (+ budgets).
