We are actively seeking postdoctoral and PhD researchers! Please contact Dr. Yokom if interested
Assistant Professor
I am first generation college graduate from the southeast part of Michigan. I found an interest in research and teaching during my Bachelor's degree at Oakland University. Eventually, this grew into PhD (University of Michigan) and Postdoctoral (University of California, Berkeley) studies. All of these opportunities paved my path to joining the Department of Biochemistry as faculty in 2023. Outside of the exciting research ongoing in the lab, I enjoy time with my sons, sampling local beers and traveling.

Hunter Madison
Biochemistry PhD Student
2023 Cohort
I am a Biochemistry PhD student working characterize the authophagosomal tethering protein EPG5 to better elucidate the process of the autophagosome-lysosome fusion events in late autophagy. I enjoy being outdoors, engaging in sports, and playing board games with friends.

Clayton Russ
Translational Biosciences PhD Student
2024 Cohort
I am a Translational Biosciences PhD student within the Infection and Immunity emphasis area. I am studying the mechanism autolysosomal tethering proteins (eg. EPG5 and the HOPS complex) in autophagy using live cell imaging. I like to spend my time outside the lab reading, cooking, and hanging out with friends.

Cade Ward
Biochemical PhD Student
2025 Cohort
I am a Biochemistry PhD student interested in using molecular and cell biology techniques to dissect autolysosomal fusion events in vitro and in vivo. I like camping, playing all kinds of games, and woodworking.

Post Bachelors Researcher
B.S. in Biochemistry, Minor in Spanish
I am focused on creating a fusion assay to uncover which proteins are responsible for fusion between the autophagosome and the lysosome in autophagy. With this, we can investigate the kinetics of fusion. In my free time I enjoy going on hikes or binge watching Supernatural on Netflix.

Our group works closely with Dr. Stephanie Gates Lab, collectively called the Gatkom lab!
Currently, her work focuses on understanding how Chaperones and the Ubiqutin Proteasome System communicate during Protein Quality Control pathways. We share equipment, lab meetings and resources. Joining our group means you get the best of both worlds and are supported across disciplines, techniques and biology (+ budgets).
